Make April Awesome!

“When we least expect it, life sends us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back , accept your destiny.”
– Paulo Coelho

So here we are, just days away from April.  This means Spring has fully sprung (only if you live out West or in Florida…as I sit and type this from my home in Ohio, I can look out my window and see SNOW falling.  Ohio, you are something else!) March Madness is at a fevered pitch, and (gulp) we are almost 1/4 through the year already.  Think about that – one quarter of 2014 is already behind us. How is your year going for you so far?

At the start of each new year, people get excited and caught up in their New Year’s Resolutions, hoping that this year is the year it will stick.  THIS is the year they’ll lose the weight, conquer their fears, stop smoking, give up sugar, only eat organic or buy fair trade.  The year they’ll walk daily, do yoga, register for that marathon or learn to swim.

I see it all too often, though; people create their resolutions with the best of intentions, only to lose steam a few months, weeks, or even days into the new year.  It’s a slippery slope…a few excuses here, missed workouts there, and eventually it’s so easy to resign oneself to start again “next year.”

But why wait to (re)start your plan to live a healthier, happier life? Who said healthy habits have to start in January?!

The thing is, most people see the new year as the perfect time to “start over” or give their health a jump start, when in reality, anytime is a great time to do this!  Hence the 30 day “Make April Awesome” challenge I am starting, and I  invite you to join me on.  Whether you need a jumpstart with your current goals, starting new ones, or want to expand your horizons a bit when it comes to health, April is going to be OUR month!

How does it work?  Ever day for the full 30 days of April, I challenge you to do one new healthy thing.  This can include (but is certainly not limited to) trying a new healthy recipe, biking to work rather than driving, trying a new workout modality (i.e. you always Zumba, but you are going to go for a hike, or you are a runner, and decide to check out a beginner Crossfit or kickboxing class) walking a new route or adding distance to your current walks, try meditation to quiet your mind – you get the idea. The point is that by the end of the month, you will have tried 30 different things that will expand your “health horizon.” Pretty awesome, right?

Too make it more fun, I will be blogging some of the things I will be trying (of course I am all in, too!) and I even have some amazing guest bloggers joining me to share their favorite healthy tips, their go-to healthy habit or piece of advice, what healthy means to them, fun and healthy suggestions or even their favorite recipe.  All meant to be inspiration for you to launch your own 30 healthy days!

If you want a goal to focus on each month in addition to the daily challenge, I encourage you to create an intention with that.  Let me know about it. Share with your friends and family, and have them hold you accountable.  My “big goal” for the month of April?  I am going to walk every single day.  At least 2 miles, rain (or snow!) or shine.  I know I can benefit from more movement in my life (we all can!) so this is my general goal.  What’s yours?

I want you to join me on my Facebook page and share each day what you tried that day.  Snap a picture (I love pictures!) drop a quick post or share on Twitter using #makeaprilawesome …the point is to create a community where we can share our ideas and what we are doing each day, making April a month of getting back to healthy.  And Happy.  And well, AWESOME.

This is 30 days of physical and mental health.  Are you ready to join me?
